Surface burning characteristics of building materials and assemblies

Canadian Building Codes require that building materials and assemblies be evaluated to CAN/ULC-S102 Standard Method of Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials and Assemblies to demonstrate compliance with the requirements in the building codes. The tests are conducted in the Canadian Tunnel apparatus. This 25-ft furnace chamber measures flame spread and smoke development. Based on the type of building construction and use, building products may also be required to be tested to other Canadian fire test standards. Some of these standards utilize actual building construction such as full-scale calorimeter rooms, open corners or walls.

The specific flame spread ratings and smoke development classifications determined in CAN/ULC-S102 are dependent on building types and occupancies.
