Electromagnetic Compatibility

New technologies require new safety standards, as well as regulations that help ensure that the products have no unplanned effects on the environment and other technologies via unintended electromagnetic emissions or interference. Partner with UL to bring safer, fully-compliant, advanced products to the global market.

Testing Services

EMC testing demonstrates that an electric-powered product's emissions will not affect operation of other powered-products operating in the same environment. Additionally meeting EMC standards helps ensure that your product will not be affected by other product's emissions.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Part 15 Rule requires manufacturers of most electronic devices that are not intentional transmitters to verify that their products do not produce harmful emissions. Intentional transmitters must be certified to validate that they will not cause radio frequency interference.

UL is accredited to conduct EMC/FCC compliance testing to the EMC requirements of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) through the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP - NVLAP lab code 100255-0). UL's EMC facilities are included in the FCC's list of testing sites for radio frequency emissions testing UL provides worldwide EMC testing for all lighting products, including :

  • FCC Part 15 and FCC Part 18 for the United States

  • EMC Directive or applicable EN standards for the European Union

  • Industry Canada (IC) or Standards Council of Canada (SCC) guidelines

  • Japanese Voluntary Control Council for Interference (VCCI) requirements
