New GB standard for audiovisual products in China

On December 30, 2011, a new version of the GB safety standard for audiovisual products, GB8898:2011 Audio, Video and Similar Electronic Apparatus - Safety Requirements, was announced as a national standard for China.

The new standard is being published and is expected to be available for order in March 2012. According to the Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China (SAC), the new standard will come into effect on December 1, 2012.

After November 1, 2012, the China Quality Certification Centre (CQC) will not accept any applications in reference to the old version of GB8898. Based on the new standard, the Certification and Accreditation Administration of China (CNCA) and CQC will issue an announcement on detailed upgrade plans. However, no date has been set for this announcement.

Meanwhile, the approval of the new GB4943 Safety of Information Technology Equipment standard will be delayed so as to address the ongoing issues related to the World Trade Organization technical barriers to trade.

UL will continue to monitor the progress of the new GB8898 and GB4943 standards and provide updates in a timely manner.

Once the final details of GB8898 are available in the public domain, UL will be able provide our clients with an impact analysis, in addition to the China Compulsory Certification updating service with limited testing.
