Landfill Waste Diversion Claim Validation

Marketplace Overview

Industrial facilities in the U.S. generate and dispose of approximately 7.6 billion tons of industrial solid waste each year. In the European Union, more than 2.5 billion tons of waste—including industrial waste—is generated and disposed of in landfills each year. And in developing nations, 100 percent of waste is sent to landfills.

Unfortunately, landfills have detrimental effects on both the environment and our health—from toxins leaching into our soil and groundwater to methane gas polluting the air we breathe. And while environmentally responsible companies strive to lessen their impacts through creative waste diversion programs, meaningful tools to communicate these efforts to the marketplace are hard to find. What’s more, self-declarations, self-awarded ecolabels, and vague environmental claims provide little value for either the companies or their customers.

Competitive Advantage

UL Environment can help. By validating facilities’ landfill waste diversion claims, UL Environment empowers companies with the tools they need to send a clear message to customers, the community, and employees that waste reduction and sustainability are environmental priorities for their business.

Not only will the facilities be featured by name in UL Environment’s Sustainable Products Database, but also, they are entitled to use the UL environmental claim validation badge in their promotional and marketing materials. This mark assures customers that one of the world’s most trusted third-party organizations stands behind the companies’ landfill diversion claims—giving companies extra credibility in the marketplace, as well as a competitive edge.

Procedure Overview

UL Environment’s waste diversion claims are specific and measurable, allowing companies and organizations to prove their environmental leadership to the marketplace in a credible and meaningful way.

There are three types of landfill waste diversion claims eligible for validation:

  • Zero Waste to Landfill – The highest designation, this claim will be validated by UL Environment if a facility can prove that it consistently achieves a landfill waste diversion rate of 100%.
  • Virtually Zero Waste to Landfill – This designation is reserved for facilities that have achieved a landfill diversion rate of 98% or greater.
  • Landfill Diversion Rate – This claim may be validated if a facility achieves a landfill diversion rate of greater than or equal to 80%. UL Environment will denote the specific diversion rate on the validated claim mark.

UL Environment re-evaluates all claims on an annual basis through a strict auditing process. This ensures program rigor, consistency, and marketplace credibility.
