Investigating Product Safety

Chemicals

Understanding product and process safety can lead to safer practices and in turn help reduce overall risks to individuals and the environment. Thus, the chemical industry within UL has been chartered with the task of investigating the safety of a wide variety of products. We accomplish this by assisting manufacturers to align their products to the correct Listing category and applicable standard. And the products we examine range from individual components to elements of large systems.

Furthermore, UL engineers can assist manufacturers in the interpretation and application of these requirements, as well as providing testing programs that are tailored to a variety of product needs. Our testing programs have been developed with the safety of the public and the environment in mind.

Our commitment to addressing safety needs has been driving our behavior for over 100 years. Learn how we can help you define safety requirement needs for your products.

Electrical Insulation systems

Complex electrical applications demand great diligence in verifying that individual insulation materials can perform together in shared environments. UL is unique in the way it evaluates and certifies electrical insulation systems (EIS) not only as individual components, but also as a complete system. For more insight.

Gaskets and Seals

UL's certification program for gaskets and seals covers test procedures and performance criteria for the evaluation of nonmetallic gasket and seal materials such as elastomers, composite gasket material, flexible cellular material, thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers for use as components and parts of end-products. For more insight.

Labels

Conveying critical safety information to consumers is one of the things we focus on at UL. Using the appropriate adhesive based labels, nameplates, and markers on products is very important when you need to convey critical safety, hazard, warning, and instructional information. Here you will find information regarding the permanency of marking requirements for these labels under the Marking & Labeling Systems program. For more insight.

Plastics

Plastics are being used in many things today. Find out how we test and certify plastic materials and related products as well as the processes used in testing both components and end products.  For more insight.

Flammable and combustible fluids

Gas and oil equipment includes many different types of products intended for the handling and storage of flammable and combustible fluids.  Learn more at our Energy section.
