Investing in LTE 4G test capacity to enable mobile cloud computing

As a global standard, the number of frequency bands that will be required to be employed by mobile devices could be extensive. To assist our customers as they continue to keep up and expand the number of bands that their products support, UL has been investing in our test capability to provide maximum coverage.

Through its subsidiary RFI Global Services Ltd in the UK, UL has invested in 4th Generation mobile technology test systems by Anritsu, a pioneer in the implementation of next-generation wireless technologies. LTE (Long Term Evolution) or E-UTRA (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access) is a truly global mobile telecommunications standard offering high data rates with low latency and is seen as the key technology enabler for mobile cloud computing, mobile gaming and video streaming.

The Anritsu RF/RRM platform features electronically tuneable filters and the protocol system is an ‘all bands’ solution, allowing for greater support from the one test system.

“The physical layer and communication protocols are complex”, said Robert Graham Cellular Technical Group Manager at UL Verification Services. “Our close ties with Anritsu and detailed knowledge of the test systems and test cases mean that we can offer unique debug assistance to our customers.”

Having been in collaboration together for a decade in the cellular field, Anritsu implements the latest 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) test cases and then utilises UL’s expertise as a testing and validation organization to ensure the integrity of their implementation. The validated test cases are then be used by mobile device manufacturers to certify products against the GCF (Global Certification Forum) and PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board) requirements for access to cellular networks worldwide.

RFI is now offering commercial services in the UK for LTE RF, RRM and protocol conformance testing and has added this service to its extensive ISO 17025 testing schedule.
